It's buried in the rot gut gin

I spent the day waitressing at my parents' marriage counceling groups' end fest thingie. Ouch, I'm so exhausted - you know the state where you're not entirely sure whether you're asleep or not, so it wouldn't surprise you at all if the computer turned into a pink cheshire cat or something.

Um, hi to all the new and not-so-new people-anymore on the flist! You got caught in one of my 'meh, I don't feel like updating LJ' slumps, I'm afraid. :/ I have already forgotten most of the things I've been meaning to blog about, so I'll just post a small list and try to start over.

  • I've mostly been knitting - I finished my Briar Rose (which immediately became my favourite piece of clothing), made a small scarf, started on an entrelac blanket (which I'm planning to make 1m*2m large... ehheh, let's see when I can afford to buy more yarn for it) and almost-made Verity (I need to bind off and darn in the ends. HATE this stage.) I might have a tiny crush on Ysolda. I also made a beautiful needle roll (my sewing's still wonky, but the fabrics are lovely - I'm sad I can't share it with you) and some bird stitch markers. (I saw these on Etsy and thought 'Eh, that can't be too difficult. I'll make some myself but with Finnish birds!' Erm, not quite so. I've made seven so far and every bird (except the blackbird, but that was just cheating) has taken at least half an hour, not including the attaching of the wire loop. They're cute, though.)
  • At the moment I'm kind of 'Harry Potter, whut?' so I've been ignoring the fandom things on my flist. I am following the JKR/SVA case though. And there was a pseuicide thread on Ravelry, which I think made up for all the fandom activity I've missed in the past month.
  • We were watching LOTR during Easter at my grandmother's place, and she announced she had seen it before. This made me LOL since my granny is getting close to 80 and mostly watches things like The Bold & The Beautiful and Emmerdale. I have such nerdy genes. Her commentary was priceless at times: "They put a rope on that boy!" (When Sam and Frodo captured Gollum.)
  • From the Neil Gaiman's Journal For The Motherfucking Win front: I am filled with a sudden craving for a Heidelberg duelling scar. Look how pretty! (Er, ignore the Nazi photo, it was just a good example.) Nice, clean scars like that really accentuate a face, I think. So, who volunteers to poke me with sharp objects? I think [info]muraatti should do it since I cut her lip in half with scissors once, except that she's in China at the moment. *sends email*
  • I've been reading your posts and I've meant to comment way more often than I've actually managed to do so. This point feels tacky and I assume I'll regret writing it tomorrow, but it's still true.
  • This personality test result was quite shocking, but at least the description fits me:
  • In the near future I intend to play Quidditch (H_E) and study for my finals. I should draw something for the H_E art contest (which I think ends tomorrow?) because I haven't participated in any of the H_E fan art things in ages and I'd kind of like to help Ravenclaw gain a triple House Cup victory, but we'll see how it goes. (See the 'whut, HP?' part above.) I'll try not to disappear for such a long time again.

Oh, and many thanks to the person who nominated me for 'Most Curious' in the H_E superlatives! Awesomeness.

I need to make a real post, seriously, but for now I'd say this is the best prank of the day.

Hooked on a feeling

I think today's XKCD was brilliant.

And Coilhouse continues to rock my world. A while ago they linked to We Love Hijab, a muslim fashion blog. It's absolutely fascinating from an outsider's point of view (especially the discussion posts), a prime example of why love being an internet lurker. And there are some beautiful outfits there: 1, 2, 3, 4 (STFU IT'S AWESOME) - funnily enough, all of these are more flattering to the female form than the oh-so-trendy skinny pants + sack-like 'tunic' look of the moment.

This is where I talk about my online Harry Potter community! But since half of my flist are members too, I don't think anyone will mind.

We're discussing house traits/sorting over at [info]hogwarts_elite. I wanted to read what I had said about the houses in my application (which was written between July and September 2006). Since it was more amusing than I remembered, I ended up reading the whole thing and now I'll share some lultastic bits for posterity.

THE GOOD (aka 'I'm so wicked smaht')

3. Who is your least favourite character in the series?

...there are many things that could have been used to flesh-out [Dumbledore's] character more – the whole Grindelwald business, for example, or his family background. So unless Harry finds out more about Dumbledore in the final book, I’m going to claim that JKR didn’t fully exploit the character’s potential.
...
It seems to me that Dumbledore was always mainly concerned about pushing his own agenda, and failed to observe the effects this behaviour actually had on the people around him.

And then I read DH and was all *clapclapclap*

THE BAD (aka MOST AMAZING HP THEORY EVER)

I think that when wizards count clockwise and counterclockwise stirs, they’re approximating irrational numbers, depending on the viscosity of the liquid.

*dies* This was something I came up with when I had to write Snape's notes for the SS/RL library smut comic of doom (which I really should finish some day). I remember I thought people in H_E would be serious *~elitists~* with sticks up their arses who spend their time discussing HP in the light of different literary theories and stuff. So I put this in to A) make myself seem smarter than I am and B) make everyone so curious that they'd have to let me join. Then I was deeply disappointed when no one asked me anything about it.

I still think it might be true. :D

THE UGLY

Most of my friendships exist because I find those people interesting or admirable and think I can learn something from them.

I can't believe no one called me on the Claw push. Although the Idiot's Guide to Sorting was written right after I was sorted, and it contains the line "Likewise, replying to votes with the house you wish to be in will be considered pushing for that particular house." Which I did, and I knew it was blatant, but I was on an emotional high! I couldn't help it! Anyway, I've always wondered if that sentence was prompted by me.

---

It was so odd to read the app. It's only been a year and a half, and my opinions haven't changed that much. Still, the tone of my writing, and the person I present myself as, seem totally strange. I actually think I've become more Clawish through spending time with H_E Claws. I remember my first Ravenchat, when people were mostly posting links to youtube videos (like this and this) and I sat there thinking 'Guys, we're so off topic! In fact, what is the topic?' NOW I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW AWESOME THEY ARE.

Which I suppose is a long-winded way of saying that I appreciate what you've done to me. &cookiehearts; And I meant to ask if anyone else feels the same about their H_E house?

ETA: Oh, and I also meant to post comment on the coolness of Neil Gaiman's opinions on not paying for books.

Gahh, I hate editing this entry cause every time I do so my tag disappears.

Wilt thou love, cherish, and keep her, in sickness or in health - sorry, turned over two pages

Woah, FreakAngels looks promising. It's a weekly webcomic by Warren Ellis and Paul Duffield set in a steampunk-style future world. I got the link from one of my blogs and don't know anything more, but the art is breathtaking. I can't pinpoint what it reminds me of - there's a bit of Alack Sinner in the line quality, Blacksad in the colours, Didier Comes is somewhere there too... but anyway, check it out! (It's also [info]freakangels)

I am grumpy for I have not had any new Wimsey novels for two days. The last one I read was Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club, which is probably also my favourite I've read so far. I always say I shouldn't get started with new fandoms, because I tend to get obsessed... yeah. But squee, Wimsey! I can't remember the last time I was so infatuated with a fictional character. I didn't get any sleep the night before last, so I read Douglas Coupland's jPod (which a cool girl recommended to us last summer in the Deathly Hallows queue) out of spite. Not in one sitting, though, since I had started it during the previous day's lectures. ;P It was perceptive, but dragged somewhat.

And then I had to get up at 7 am because my mom invited me to Valentine's breakfast at Café Ekberg. ♥! They have a buffet with the bestest coffee and scrambled eggs and lots of other stuff, when I become rich and famous I'm going to go there every morning. We also bought small frames as gifts for each other. A framing shop on the same street had a whole box of tiny, pretty frames for 5 euros apiece. Totally useless and therefore uplifting!

My school is going to hell, I haven't done any work in weeks. I tell to myself that on some days it's more relevant to one's personal growth to read good books, HA.

I wonder if I could still use the mixer even though it's past midnight? I have the ingredients for my special orange-rice-whipped cream -dessert and the craving, it burns.

I like you all, ta.

Fic or treat!

Apparently this started in H_E but I totally missed it until recently. I have many things I should rather be doing, but this sounds too fun to pass.

Comment here and I will give you something! I'll take comments until tomorrow and will probably post the gifts tomorrow night/in a couple of days.

A junk post for testing HTML tags

We were in our rooms in Baker Street one evening. I was (I remember) by the centre table writing out 'The Adventure of the Man Without a Cork Leg' (which had so puzzled the Royal Society and all the other scientific bodies in Europe), and Holmes was amusing himself with a little revolver practice.

It was his custom of a summer evening to fire round my head, just shaving my face, until he had made a photograph of me on the opposite wall, and it is a slight proof of his skill that many of these portraits in pistol shots are considered admirable likenesses.
